Wagejot is the name of the swampy bird paradise behind the Wadden dyke near Oosterend, created after cutting off a bend in the old dyke. ‘Jote’ or ‘jotte’ is an old word for curved wood, which was used for fences.

This is a good little place for oystercatchers, avocets, redshanks and coot or even a grey phalarope. Birdwatchers experience raptures of delight when an unknown bird lands. The freshwater pond here on the golf course is magnet for such birds.

The Wagejot is for birdwatchers what hole 12 of this golf course is for golfers: a birdie paradise. Oystercatchers, coots and avocets enjoy a dizzying array of lost golf balls, because even though the hole is short, it’s certainly not as easy as the proverbial duck soup!
